Our story

From a Creative Philosophy to a Community Interest Company

A journey of purpose, practice and public benefit.

BE(YOU)FULL began in 2010 as an exploration of identity, connection and self-expression. It has since developed into a Community Interest Company working across education, mentoring, research and human development.

Our story continues

From idea to institution

The same purpose. A wider field of action.

The name BE(YOU)FULL began as a playful invitation to “be yourself fully”. Beneath that invitation was a more serious question: how might identity, creativity and education help people participate more consciously in the world?

Over time, that question expanded into an interdisciplinary body of work connecting identity, awareness, judgement, decision-making, agency, relationships and contribution.

Concept creation

Where it all began

BE(YOU)FULL originated in 2010 as a graphic design university project developed by Carlos Simpson at the University of the West of England, UWE Bristol.

The project explored identity, connection, individuality and self-expression. It proposed that creativity and education could help people understand themselves, relate to others and participate more constructively in the world.

The original project established the conceptual foundation for the phrase “be yourself fully” and introduced themes that would later become central to BE(YOU)FULL: identity, awareness, relationships, responsibility and social participation.

Studio integration

From university project to creative practice

Between 2016 and 2024, BE(YOU)FULL became part of Carlos Simpson Design Studio in London. It evolved from an academic concept into a creative-social initiative connecting design, art and human development.

Its focus expanded beyond visual communication to include education, community engagement, reflective practice, mentoring and social-impact thinking.

The studio provided a practical environment in which BE(YOU)FULL could be tested through visual culture, communication, publication, mentoring and public-facing creative work.

Expansion and alignment

Building the intellectual and practical foundations

BE(YOU)FULL developed into a more clearly defined human-development system. Its concepts were organised into connected frameworks addressing identity, awareness, judgement, agency, decision, action and participation.

This phase aligned the philosophy with practical applications in mentoring, education, leadership development and reflective practice.

The development of original conceptual models made it possible to translate the philosophy into structured learning, research and mentoring practices.

Institutionalisation

Becoming BE(YOU)FULL CIC

In October 2025, the movement reached a major institutional milestone through the establishment of BE(YOU)FULL CIC , a legally recognised Community Interest Company.

The CIC structure safeguards its public-benefit purpose and provides an accountable foundation for advancing education, creativity, mentoring, research, youth development and responsible social participation.

BE(YOU)FULL CIC develops mentoring, education and sustainability-led programmes intended to help young people strengthen agency, confidence, self-expression and their capacity to participate constructively in their communities.

It works with educators, schools, practitioners and institutional partners to support inclusive learning environments, healthier relationships and more empathetic communities.

Research, programmes and partnerships

Moving from foundations to implementation

BE(YOU)FULL now brings its philosophy, research and frameworks into practical work with young people, educators, mentors, leaders, organisations and institutional partners.

The current phase centres on responsible deployment: developing evidence-informed programmes, strengthening partnerships, publishing original frameworks and evaluating what changes through practice.

The next stage is not defined by scale alone. It is defined by the quality, integrity and measurable value of the work delivered.

01 Where did the idea for BE(YOU)FULL originally come from?

BE(YOU)FULL originated in 2010 as a graphic design university project developed by Carlos Simpson at UWE Bristol. It explored identity, authenticity, connection and the invitation to “be yourself fully” in a complex and changing world.

02 How did BE(YOU)FULL become a Community Interest Company?

As the work expanded from a creative philosophy into mentoring, educational development, research and partnership activity, it required a formal structure. BE(YOU)FULL CIC was incorporated in October 2025 to protect its social purpose and provide an accountable platform for public-benefit work.

03 Why was the CIC model chosen instead of a standard company?

The Community Interest Company model combines operational discipline with mission protection. Its asset lock and public-benefit requirements support the long-term purpose of BE(YOU)FULL while allowing the organisation to develop sustainable programmes, partnerships and earned income.

04 What has remained constant from the original philosophy?

The central purpose has remained consistent: helping people understand who they are, recognise what they value, develop agency and participate more responsibly. The methods have expanded, but the relationship between identity, awareness and contribution remains fundamental.

Looking ahead

Our story is still being written.

Today, BE(YOU)FULL represents both a philosophy and an organisation: a developing synthesis of creative identity, education, mentoring, research and social responsibility.

“To change the world for a better place, we need to start with education — by supporting educators and children in need.”

From its origins as a design-based inquiry into identity, BE(YOU)FULL has developed into a platform connecting art, education and human development. Its continuing purpose is to help people live and participate more authentically, consciously and fully.
