For headteachers, senior leaders & pastoral teams

Mentor Training for Schools

BE(YOU)FULL CIC works with schools that want mentoring to be part of their culture, not an add-on. We train staff to have purposeful, structured conversations with young people that support behavior, well-being, and long-term achievement.

Our mentor training for schools is built around your timetable, your priorities, and your staff. Whether you want to strengthen tutor time, support pastoral teams, or develop student mentors, we can help you design a mentoring approach that fits your context.

Why Schools Invest in Mentor Training

Many schools already have staff who are “that person” students go to when things are difficult. Mentor training helps you move from a few natural mentors to a whole-school approach.

When mentoring is intentional, structured, and shared, it becomes a powerful lever for:

Behaviour & Belonging

Regular, trusted adults reduce low-level disruption, improve attendance, and help students feel that they matter.

Wellbeing & Safeguarding

Trained mentors notice patterns earlier, know how to listen safely, and pass concerns on appropriately.

Achievements & Aspirations

Mentoring links daily effort to long-term goals so students can see a future that is worth working towards.

Who the Mentor Training Is For

We tailor each programme, but most schools include a mix of staff who have regular contact with young people:

Tutors & Classroom Teachers

Staff who see students every day and shape their sense of routine, expectations and support.

Pastoral & Behaviour Teams

Heads of year, pastoral leads, and safeguarding and inclusion teams who hold complex cases and conversations.

Senior & Middle Leaders

Leaders are responsible for culture, behaviour, personal development and school improvement plans.

Support Staff

Teaching assistants, learning mentors, admin and lunchtime staff who often know students in different ways.

Student Mentors

In some schools we have designed a second strand to train student mentors or peer supporters alongside staff.

How Our Mentor Training Runs in Schools

We fit our training around real school life. That usually means a combination of staff training sessions, practical tools and follow-up reflection.

1. Planning with Leaders

  • Short online or in-person meeting with SLT or the lead for behaviour/pastoral care.
  • Clarify your priorities, cohort and timetable constraints.
  • Agree on success measures that matter to your school.

2. Staff Training Sessions

  • Interactive workshops, not lectures.
  • Core mentoring skills include listening, questioning, boundaries and goal setting.
  • Tools and prompts that staff can use straight away in conversations with students.

3. Follow-Up & Embedding

  • Short review sessions to share what is working and where staff need more support.
  • Guidance on linking mentoring to behaviour systems, data and curriculum.
  • Options for ongoing supervision or coaching for key staff if needed.

We can run half-day, full-day, twilight or term-length programmes depending on your schedule. To explore options for your school, book a school mentoring call.

A Sample One-Term Mentor Training Pathway

Every school is different, but this is a typical model many partners start with:

Week 1

Core mentoring principles, roles and boundaries.

Week 3

Listening skills, questioning and structuring conversations.

Week 5

Working with behaviour, emotions and safeguarding routes.

Week 7

Review, reflection and next steps for your school.

We adjust the content and pacing for primary, secondary and post-16 settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the mentor training for schools?

Most schools start with a one-term pathway that includes several training sessions and at least one follow-up. We can also design one-off INSET days, twilight sessions, or a full-year mentoring strand if that suits your context better.

How many staff can join each cohort?

We usually recommend 10–25 staff per cohort so there is time for practice and discussion. Larger staff teams can be split, or we can combine whole-staff input with smaller follow-up groups.

Can you help us set up a student mentor or peer support programme?

Yes. Many schools ask us to train staff first and then design a second strand for student mentors. We can help you identify what is realistic, safe and aligned with your wider school culture.

Is the training delivered online or in person?

We offer in-person, online and blended formats depending on location and budget. All training is interactive and designed around real conversations—not long PowerPoints or lectures.

How do we get started?
